Your internet lawn – why you should own your domain! by Jonathan Siemens on November 20th, 2019

In July on this very blog, Kristi spoke about the importance of branding yourself and I want to take that one step further. Like it or not, we are living in a digital world and what is more digital than a URL – your front lawn on the internet. Amazon.com, O.co, Google.com, ChizComm.com are all well-known websites domains, but what about yourname.com? Truth be told, that domain is equally as important if not more. If you don’t own your own name online, who does? Is the domain still available? Has someone parked something there? Even worse, what if it’s malicious? If it’s still available, what are you waiting for? Today is the day to take ownership of your name (and reputation) online. People spend countless hours perfecting their image, cultivating their brand on social media and building their network but often forget about a website. One of the first things people do when meeting new people (especially via email) is to Google them — if that new client or potential new job looked you up online right now, what would they find? For less than $0.10 a day, you can buy your domain, build a free website and take control of the messaging when people search you online. Whether you have a common or uncommon name, you still want to make sure your presence online is as polished as your social media one.

How do I buy a domain?

So much of what we do in PR is controlling the message and trying to anticipate our client’s needs and being proactive in managing their presence in the real world. Too often we forget to take the same time and care for our personal brands. Buying your own domain is easy, all it takes is 5 minutes and a credit card. There are plenty of sites out there selling domains, GoDaddy is probably the best known but here is a list of other options:

  • Domain.com
  • Namecheap.com
  • Bluehost.com
  • HostGator.com
  • Name.com
  • 1&1
  • Register.com
  • InMotionHosting.com
  • NameSilo
  • Porkbun.com
  • Hover.com

No matter where you buy your domain from, the big question is…

What’s next?

So now you’ve purchased your domain and are wondering what to do with it? That will depend on what you want to accomplish with your website. Are you a student who is looking for a job or internship? If that’s the case, then build a digital resume and portfolio to After your site is built, now is your chance to add it to your resume, business cards, and social handles (keep it SFW!). Are you an industry veteran? Then take this opportunity to build a website of your accomplishments and make yourself an authority in your industry. Not sure where you fall in between these two? Then make it a passion project all about you! If you love video games then join the conversation and start reviewing them! Are you an aspiring graphic designer? Share your work and expand your portfolio. Do you have a passion for fashion? Start posting those OOTD’s and runway reviews. Owning your own domain leaves you limitless possibilities in terms of usage options, it’s up to you what you want to share and that’s what’s most important…the choice is yours!

Long story short, whether you’re a seasoned veteran or looking to take your first step in your career, your online presence matters and today is the day to take control, after all…it’s your name!
